The Trouble with Eating Cake

I thought I would update those who are interested in my project for the month on the events that have occurred so far.  Don’t worry – it won’t be boring, I promise 😉

If you would enjoy knowing more what I am going to be writing about below, I would suggest reading the following articles:

How I Accidentally Created an SOP (And what an SOP is!)

Cupcakes, Cakes, and ALL the Sweets

Well, this week I’m tasting the cakes and so far, it’s been great!  I have tasted 3 cake samples so far – Bakeries C,D, and E (Because those are the ones that are closest to me).  I will taste the others tomorrow (hopefully).  This project has been pretty fun for me so far!  I have enjoyed eating the cake! 😀

The thing that’s a little hard is pretending to be planning a wedding, but not actually HAVING a wedding.

Let me explain.

When I starting going through the sales funnels of these different bakeries, most of them answered back with things like,

“Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!”

“So happy for you!”

“Glad to be part of your special day!”

Well….uh….. whoops.

And that’s not the worst of it.  I can handle people emailing me and congratulating me (I NEVER told them I was getting married!  All I said was I was interested in learning about their wedding options…), but it gets a little awkward when I get an answer like,

“How many people are coming to your wedding, and where is it?  We will be better able to provide you with information on delivery options when you get back to us.”

But I don’t KNOW where my wedding will be or how many people will come!  I’m not even getting married!  I can’t say that though, so I just say I don’t know yet, which is very true since I’m not even engaged 😀

AND, I could even handle THAT, except for when they ask WHO my fiance IS….

Uh….

Yeah.  The tastings are the hardest part.  A lot of them have special tasting events you can schedule where you can taste the cakes for free!  Score!  But one of the forms I tried to fill out wanted to know a ton of information I don’t know, like how many people, who are you getting married to…etc.  Lots of details I don’t have since it’s not really happening.

I thought about posing as a wedding planner tasting on behalf of some clients of mine, or bringing a few friends along who happen to be getting married soon, but I decided that it would still be lying.  I would be more than guaranteed a question (or MANY questions) about a wedding that isn’t happening.  Integrity is something I value highly, so I have never told any of these bakeries that I was getting married.  Just that I was interested in learning about their wedding options.  Makes me think that maybe I should have delved into a different category…..oh well!

Finally, I figured out a way around this cake tasting problem!  2 of the bakeries offer free samples at their locations, so that was easy.  The other three, I’m just going to have to buy a small piece of their cake.  I know, it’s more expensive than I would like this project to be, but I would rather spend the money than lie to these bakeries.

So today I tasted two cake flavors from two different bakeries 🙂  One I tasted two weeks ago while I was visiting their store.

Stay tuned for Friday’s analysis when I rank the tastes of the cakes, and reveal the winners!  😉

Until next time,

Hope Frances
