10 Weird Things That Happen on Halloween That People Don’t Question
Happy November!!!
A new month brings on a new determination, a feeling of freshness! Especially with the light sprinkle of snow that we just had 😉
I don’t know about you, but I have always been one to say that snow isn’t allowed to fall until after Halloween – and this year it definitely didn’t waste any time (well, there was that snow that came last Friday, but I think that can be excused since it was the first snowfall of the season)!
That being said, a lot of people are probably still recovering from yesterday’s events. That’s right! Halloween 2017 has come and gone, and with it, a lot of weird things that happen on and around this supposed “holiday” every year.
I mean, if you think about it, the following strange events that occur every year are rarely ever questioned. They are just accepted as facts of life. It’s Halloween, this is what you do.
And before you start thinking, “Gosh, what is her problem? Does she really hate Halloween that much?” hear me out.
I just thought it would be fun to point out these weird things that happen on Halloween that nobody questions. JUST FOR FUN MIND YOU! The goal is to get you to laugh, so please don’t get upset!
So, with that disclaimer out of the way, here they are!
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, I put the best ones (in my opinion) last 😉
1 – We Carve Faces into Pumpkins and Put Fire Inside to Make Them Look Creepy
Honestly, I don’t think this is done any other time of the year. People seem a lot less interested in baking the pumpkin to eat like any other squash, and extremely intrigued in making their food look as scary as possible. Why don’t we use any of the other squashes for jack-o-lanterns? Why don’t we ever cook and eat pumpkin like we do butternut squash? I’m assuming that pumpkins are the best shaped gourds for carving, so that explains at least half of the mystery. But why don’t we ever eat cooked pumpkin with butter and salt?
2 – We Decorate Our Yards with Spooky Stuff that Scares Children
Seriously. Some of the Trick-Or-Treaters are little tiny kids. What are the chances that they are going to want to walk through the graveyard you’ve created in your front lawn to get the candy you are offering them at your doorstep? Slim to none. Now, if you really enjoy decking your yard out for Halloween, I am not saying you’re a horrible person! It’s just that some people don’t enjoy being scared! Some do, though, so maybe that’s why people do it.
3 – We Become Obsessed with Pumpkin Spice Stuff
Pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin spice bars, pumpkin spice popcorn, pumpkin spice ice cream, pumpkin spice EVERYTHING! What is it with this time of the year and pumpkin spice?! If we like it so much, why don’t we have it all year round? Why is it only acceptable to indulge in pumpkin spice during the month of October? My guess is that the people who DON’T like pumpkin spice have brainwashed the people who DO to think it is only acceptable to consume pumpkin spice things during October. Huh…if that was the goal, you guys have done a great job! 😉
4 – We Feel Obligated to Dress up In Weird Outfits
You’ve been there. Your younger siblings are dressing up, or you’re going to an event and you’re debating dressing up just to give people a laugh because it’s Halloween. Or maybe you are actually going to a party. My theory is that the fun in the game of dress up secretly never leaves us, and we have a natural desire to dress up whenever the opportunity arises. Unfortunately, society frowns upon this desire during most of the year, but on Halloween, we have a good excuse! The kids are doing it, so, naturally, we ought to join in. It’ll make it a lot more fun for the kids 😉 Not to mention, dressing up is FUN!
5 – A Fashion Contest Ensues Between Parents and Between the Kids
Don’t try to deny it – you used to compare your costume to everybody else’s when you went out on Halloween night! If you made your costume yourself, and it turned out halfway decent, you felt proud. On the other hand, if you just slapped something together the day of, you tried to fit into the crowd. This fashion contest doesn’t end when you get older. It gets worse and begins again when you have your own children! Now it becomes, “who can get their baby into the cutest outfit without making them cry?” Yup. Halloween is just an excuse for all the moms to dress up their little kids. And I don’t blame them. They’re all so cute! ❤
6 – Kids all over America feel ENTITLED to Candy
Think about it. This one’s really WEIRD. The kids feel like it’s their RIGHT to have candy just because of what day it is. On any other day of the year, parents would be annoyed that their kids are demanded candy just because. I guess it’s our fault for bringing them out on Halloween night since they could walk, but still! Any house with lights on is expected to fork over sweet stuff to children merely because they had the courage to knock on the door, and the kids supossedly “deserve” it!
7 – We Let Little Children Have and Eat TONS of Candy
It’s true. We let the kids eat so much candy on Halloween night! It’s okay! They’ve earned it! Have they? All they did was walk a few blocks and knock on doors. I could try that in my neighborhood and ask for money, but I’m pretty sure I would not be granted any, and I would argue that I don’t “deserve” it either! 😀
8 – We Take a Walk OUTSIDE in FREEZING COLD WEATHER for about 3 Hours
WHY DO WE DO THIS?! It’s SO COLD! And the sad thing is, by the time your kids are old enough to go out on their own, they’re also pretty much old enough to stop Trick-Or-Treating. Seriously! Why don’t we move Halloween to September 30th? It’s much nicer and warmer! And then we – um…I mean…the children won’t get frost bite! Now you warmer states probably don’t know what I’m talking about. Come spend Halloween with us next year and you’ll see.
9 – On November 1st, Halloween is Completely Forgotten and Christmas Begins
It’s all over Facebook: “Halloween’s over…IT’S CHRISTMAS TIME AGAIN!” Um… Whatever happened to Thanksgiving? Honestly, I think people are more interested in Black Friday than Thanksgiving. Kinda sad if you think about it. But why isn’t Thanksgiving more of a big deal? My guess is that decorating your yard for Christmas is more fun than putting turkeys in your yard. I mean, there’s just not much to do for decorations outside…plus it’s snowing a lot in Minnesota by the middle of November so Christmas feels more appropriate I guess!
10 – Random Strangers give out Candy to Children
This is the weirdest one of all. How many of you when you were younger were told, “Never accept candy from strangers! It’s dangerous!” But what do we tell the kids on Halloween? “Okay, just go up to the random house, ring the doorbell, say ‘trick-or-treat,’ and they will give you candy!” Sure, a lot of people check the candy after they get home, but sometimes the kids eat a piece in between houses (I have!). Kinda sketchy if you ask me…
Well, there you have it!
Again, I’m not ripping on Halloween (much).
The goal was to point out some interesting things that people take for granted on Halloween and hopefully make ya’ll laugh a bit!
So, HAPPY NOVEMBER, happy Thanksgiving, and Merry Christmas! 😉
Until next time,
Hope Frances
