Significant Birthday Milestones

Hey everyone!

Today I turned 19 years old.  Yup!  Today is my birthday!!!  (And NO.  It DOESN’T feel any different! :D).

So, in my mind, I kind of created these “milestone ages” that had significance depending on how old I was.  It might have been a little kid thing, but these milestones are a BIG DEAL when you’re a little kid okay?  If you had a similar (or different) idea of cool milestones that you invented, let me know! 🙂

1 Year Old

You did it!  You survived for 1 whole year!  This age is super cool because it’s the first time you have an actual AGE in years.  Unfortunately, by the time you realize the significance of this milestone, you will be too old to enjoy it.  Seriously, who remembers their first birthday?  I don’t.  But hey, you get a cake (or piece of cake) all to yourself to destroy, so it’s a GREAT day!  Hopefully there are pictures!

6 Years Old

Turing 6.  Ah.  This one isn’t a super big milestone…except that you normally start school at this age.  At this point in your life, school is exciting, fun, and wonderful 🙂 Little did you know how school would bring you tons of anxiety and consume your life later on (Just kidding!  But kind of true…just ask my brother, Sam).

10 Years Old

Turning 10 is a huge deal.  You are now officially in the coveted double digits!  This feels very good for a while, until you realize that you have to turn 100 to get to triple digits.  At this stage, you feel like you should be allowed special privileges; however, none are normally given.  On my tenth birthday, my sister, Rose, was born (a day before actually).  Additionally, I was given the honor of piercing my ears!  I was so excited.  So maybe special things do happen at 10…who knows?

12 Years Old

At 12, many people start middle school.  Entering middle school is super exciting until you realize school is still school.  This age varies too…some are 11 when they start middle school, and some are 13, but I think most are 12 (I was).

13 Years Old

This milestone is probably the coolest milestone to those under 14 because you can officially be called a “teenager.”  Instantly, you feel much more grown up and sophisticated, even though you’re not really (honestly I think that happens at every age, but this one especially).  In addition to feeling more superior, you feel as if you can hold your own with the older teenagers.  After all, you ARE a teenager yourself now!

15 Years Old

This age has many benefits.  First off, this is the age you would normally start high school!  CONGRATULATIONS!!!  High school is AWESOME (and not at the same time)!  Okay people are probably thinking I hate school….I DON’T!  I love the things I learned and I am especially thankful for my mom and the education she provided me (I was home schooled…THANK YOU MOM I LOVE YOU!!!).  ANYWAY….back on track 🙂 So, the second amazing thing that happens when you turn 15 is….you can get your driver’s permit!!!  Yes!!!  Independence is within your grasp!  Driver’s Ed though….You could live without it right?  (Just kidding… :))

16 Years Old

This is one of the big ones.  You can get your driver’s license!!!  Freedom is YOURS!!!  That is…until you realize you have become an extra driver in your household and your parents have you run errands and bring your siblings everywhere.  It is at this point that you kind of wish you did not have a license, but you’re still happy you have one.  Visiting your friends and eating out with them is WAY WORTH IT!  Oh, and by the way…You will spend a LOT more money when you get a license because it is easier to go places and go out with your friends.  Just saying.

18 Years Old

This is the biggest one in my opinion, but that’s probably because I just passed it a year ago.  You are an adult!  There a lot of things you can legally do at this stage, but you probably already know what they are and I didn’t do any of them so I won’t mention them.  You DO have this weird feeling like your childhood is completely over, and it i technically is, but that feeling goes away after a few weeks.  I’m not sure why.  Maybe it was because I was still in high school.  It’s probably different for everybody.  One of the things I got to do when I turned 18 was sign my own liability waivers!  That was (and still is) pretty cool 🙂

20 Years Old

That’s me next year…..This age is cool simply because it’s a nice round even number, and you’re out of the teen years.

21 Years Old

This one has significance to me because It’ll be my golden birthday (And ONLY for that reason!).  Honestly, it probably won’t be any different anyway!  For real.  I promise.

After that, every time you get to an age that ends in a 0, people make a huge deal out of it.  I don’t know exactly why…I think it’s because we like numbers that are even and clean looking.  The next biggest milestone would be turning 100.  I had a great grandmother that lived to be 102 🙂

I’d like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday today!  I love you all!

Additionally, I’d like to thank my parents, who’ve been my cheerleaders since forever 🙂

Until next time,

Hope Frances
