FAQ Questions I Got Asked as a Homeschooler

Since I grew up homeschooled, I was often asked a lot of the same questions over and over again.

If you were homeschooled, you know exactly what I mean.  If you weren’t, you might be thinking of these exact same questions I’m about to expose 🙂

One time, a girl asked me what homeschooling was like and I was sick of answering the same questions so I told her I was locked in a closet all day and chained to my desk for 10 hours straight.  Let’s just say the look on her face was priceless XD.

Yeah that’s not true.

Here are my FAQ from being homeschooled, and their respective answers:

Question – What Time Does Your School Start and End?

Answer –

I typically tried to start working on school at 9 AM or earlier, but sometimes I wouldn’t.  Getting school done quicker in the day meant more free time later in the evening (when more of my extracurricular activities were going on).  School ended when I was done for the day 🙂  So if I was done by noon, I was done (unless I decided to work ahead so I didn’t have to do school the next day).  Sometimes I would accidentally sleep in and have to do school into the evening which meant no movies at night.

Question – Do You Do School in Your Pajamas?

Answer –

I did sometimes… But honestly, I felt like a slob if I wasn’t dressed by 11 AM!  There were times when I did spend the whole day in my pajamas, but again, I felt really lazy about it.  So the times when I did that were few.

Question – How Do You Have Friends?

Answer –

Uhhh…Seriously?  The same way you have friends – I introduce myself.  But I know what they really mean is, “how do you meet people outside of school?”  Simple.  I was involved in sports, acting, co-ops, art classes, camps, and I live in a neighborhood with kids my age down the street.  And all of those activities and places had people that I met and befriended.  Plus, my parents’ business partners had kids and we got to see each other all the time.

Question – What is a “Co-op”?

Answer –

Long story short, a co-op is like attending school once a week with other homeschoolers.  You pick and choose your classes, attend them on Thursdays (or whatever day it’s on), get homework for the week, hang out with friends, and go home.  It’s a way for homeschool moms to get that biology course out of the way without having to do dissections on the kitchen table 😉

Question – How Do You Do Phy Ed?

Answer –

We have various weights and I just worked out in our basement or bonus room every day.  60 hours a semester = 1/2 of a high school credit.

Question – Who Teaches You?

Answer –

My mom did a ton of the teaching from kindergarten through 8th grade, and my dad did some too!  Once I got into high school, I did pretty much everything on my own through a curriculum we’d buy, or online PSEO (college classes).

Question – Why Do You Get That Random Day Off Of School?

Answer –

Various reasons…either my mom was sick, we were on family vacation, or I doubled up the week before and decided to take a day off.  If you’re talking about the fact that I got done with school the Friday before Memorial Day every year, that’s different.  I was always on summer vacation before my public school friends because that’s just the way we did things.  We were done, we started summer vacation.

Question – What About Snow Days?

Answer –

We didn’t have to leave the house…so snow days were non-existent.

Question – Do You Like Being Homeschooled?

Answer –

I LOVED IT!  First, I truly feel that my family is more tight-knit because of it.  For example, my brother and I used to get done with school as early as possible so we could play with each other all day long until bedtime, and the relationships I have with my parents are so incredible.  Second, I learned to love learning and to keep the habit of life-long learning in my life as long as I live.  I am forever grateful that my parents decided to homeschool me, and I wouldn’t have it any other way 🙂

Until next time,

Hope Frances
